Professional Conduct for Football Agents when Representing Athletes

Professional conduct for football agents when representing athletes plays a crucial role in building careers and the success of players.

I am Juliano Alvarenga, CEO of On Scout, and in this guide, I will share with you a detailed step-by-step on how a football agent should conduct themselves when representing athletes. I will highlight the importance of partnerships with other agents and emphasize key tips and errors to avoid regarding professionalism and ethics.

As I entered the football world by developing the platform, I encountered various situations in my interactions with agents. Since our platform has agents from various locations, it’s common to receive market opportunities for athletes. When I shared these opportunities with other agents in the groups I am part of, some attitudes caught my attention.

These approaches ranged from demanding direct access to the club that provided the vacancy (which I found somewhat absurd since I always believed in mutual cooperation for better results, as well as considering that 100% of nothing is nothing) to the connection between those who provided the opportunity, the athlete, and their agent aiming for a successful deal.

Such diverse approaches I received left me intrigued (even though I am not an agent). Seeing that in such a vast market, I needed to know and understand if certain attitudes would be common or not, and what the correct stance for an agent should be towards their athlete and the market.

I consulted partner agents, studied the market, interviewed sports lawyer and FIFA agent Heslley Couto (watch the interview below), and as a result, I developed this basic guide to help you separate the wheat from the chaff, expand your opportunities, and avoid falling for scams. And of course, to guide beginner agents.

I. Tips for a Football Agent’s Conduct when Representing an Athlete:

1. Know the athlete well: Conduct a thorough analysis of the player, understanding their skills, strengths, playing style, and career goals. This will allow you to identify the best opportunities and represent them adequately.

2. Build a relationship of trust: Establish a strong and trusting relationship with the athlete, always being available to listen to their needs and concerns. Demonstrate your commitment to helping them achieve their goals.

3. Develop a career strategy: Create a personalized action plan for the athlete, defining short and long-term goals. This includes identifying suitable clubs, relevant competitions, and marketing strategies to increase the player’s visibility.

4. Build a network of contacts: Form partnerships with other agents, scouts, and professionals in the football industry. This will expand your business opportunities and facilitate introducing the athlete to relevant clubs and competitions.

5. Stay updated: Stay informed about the latest trends, regulations, and developments in the world of football. This includes changes in transfers, contracts, and rules that may affect the player’s career.

II. Main Errors to Avoid When Failing with Professionalism and Ethics:

1. Lack of transparency: Be honest and transparent with the athlete, providing accurate information about opportunities, financial agreements, contractual clauses, and other relevant aspects. Do not hide information or make unilateral decisions without the player’s consent.

2. Conflict of interest: Avoid situations where your personal interests may conflict with the athlete’s interests. This includes not favoring specific clubs or contracts for your own benefit.

3. Excessive commissions: Establish fair and transparent commissions in line with industry standards. Do not financially exploit the athlete by charging excessive commissions that harm their career.

4. Neglecting the athlete’s rights: Be aware of the player’s legal rights and obligations. Ensure that all contracts and agreements comply with labor laws and current sports regulations. Protect the athlete’s interests by ensuring their rights are respected in all negotiations and transactions.

5. Lack of communication: Maintain clear and consistent communication with the athlete, keeping them informed about all relevant activities and developments. Be available to answer their questions and concerns, providing adequate support throughout their career.

III. Resources and Recommended Practices for Football Agents:

1. Professional associations and organizations: Join associations and organizations that promote ethics and professionalism in the football agent industry. This will offer guidance, resources, and networking opportunities. It is extremely important to be legally authorized for this role.

2. Education and updates: Seek opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skills through courses, workshops, and events related to football career management. Stay updated on best practices and emerging trends.

3. Legal contracts and services: Consult lawyers specializing in sports law to review and draft contracts, ensuring that all transactions comply with applicable regulations and laws.

4. Networking and scouting: Develop a strong network of contacts by participating in events, fairs, and sports competitions. Be present at relevant games and tournaments to identify promising talents and establish connections with clubs and scouts.

5. Marketing and promotion: Utilize digital marketing strategies to promote the athletes you represent. This may include creating a professional website, using social media, and producing relevant content to increase their visibility.

Conclusion:

Representing a football athlete requires not only technical knowledge but also professional and ethical behavior. By following the tips provided in this guide and avoiding common mistakes, you are on the right path to building a solid career as a football agent. Always remember to prioritize the athlete’s interests, act with transparency and ethics, and constantly seek professional development and improvement.

If you want to stand out as a football agent, follow these guidelines, be a reliable partner, and dedicate yourself to the success of the athletes you represent. With a professional and ethical approach, you will be prepared to face the challenges and seize opportunities in a complex and competitive football market.

And for those of you who are parents of athletes or athletes themselves, if your agent does not adhere to basic conduct principles, I suggest reconsidering.
